About The Position

The Clinical Instructor provides laboratory and clinical instruction for dental hygiene students in an on campus clinical facility, and may include off-campus fieldwork sites. This is a full-time, 0.8, 9-month faculty position with primary responsibility for laboratory and clinical teaching, and limited expectation for scholarly contributions or university service. The teaching load for this position includes approximately 25-28 hours of laboratory and clinical teaching per week for both the fall and spring semesters with the expectation to teach in one evening clinic per week. Clinical teaching may include off-campus fieldwork sites. Remaining time each week will be spent on clinical support activities. Weekly work schedule will be established each semester based on laboratory and clinical schedule and may include evening hours.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited dental hygiene program
  • Bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene or related field; master’s degree preferred
  • Oregon dental hygiene license with local anesthesia endorsement, nitrous oxide permit and restorative functions endorsement; expanded practice permit preferred
  • Current knowledge of dental infection control procedures, radiation safety, emergency management, HIPAA and FERPA
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers
  • Formal preparation in educational theory and teaching methods
  • Knowledge of current concepts in dental hygiene and dental hygiene education
  • Current teaching experience in clinical dental hygiene education
  • Current clinical experience as a licensed dental hygienist
  • Experience working with patients who have limited access to dental care
  • Experience with computer-based dental practice management systems
  • Experience with Microsoft Office computer software including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrates high level of organizational skill and attention to detail
  • Organizes tasks, sets priorities and manages multiple projects
  • Works both independently and as a team member
  • Communicates effectively with students, patients, faculty and staff
  • Speaks and understands basic Spanish appropriate to a dental setting
  • Establishes professional relationships and maintains appropriate boundaries
  • Responds appropriately to stressful situations, accidents and emergencies
  • Presents a professional appearance and attitude
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and continue to work without employer visa sponsorship, now or in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Provide laboratory and clinical instruction and supervision for dental hygiene students.
  • Evaluate student clinical skills, give constructive feedback and provide remediation.
  • Monitor patient care to ensure that patients receive safe and appropriate care.
  • Assist with orientation, calibration and supervision of part-time clinical instructors.
  • Assess the completeness and accuracy of student, patient and clinic records.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information related to students, patients, faculty and staff.
  • Monitor student, patient and instructor compliance with clinical policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a role model for the dental hygiene profession.
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of clinic equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and clinic protocols
  • Assist Clinic coordinators with pre- and post-semester supply distribution and inventory
  • Lead pre- and post- semester clinic preparation
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
