Open Rank, Clinical Faculty Appointment (CFA) - GI Medical Oncology
About The Position
The primary purpose of this Open Rank faculty position is to provide expert clinical care to patients with gastrointestinal cancers, participate in translational and/or clinical research, and contribute to the teaching and training of fellows, residents, and students. The role involves practicing clinical medicine according to the standards set by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, developing and maintaining a clinical practice, and ensuring proper coding and documentation. The position also requires staying current with medical advancements through continuing education, sharing clinical responsibilities, requesting consultations, and participating in peer review and quality improvement projects. Administrative duties include participating in best practice initiatives, serving on committees, and representing the department at meetings. Research activities involve engaging in clinical and translational research, developing research programs, identifying funding sources, and submitting grant applications. Educational responsibilities include acting as a role model, providing a balanced educational program, attending teaching conferences, and supervising trainees. External service may include participating in research committees, collaborative research, conferences, and professional society activities, as well as editing and reviewing scientific publications.
Requirements
- Hold or be eligible for medical licensure in Texas.
- Possess an M.D.
- At least two (2) years as Instructor or (5) years post clinical degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist or GME trainee (except specialties with shorter residencies or fellowships).
- Appropriate post medical doctoral training per discipline.
- Licensed to practice in State of Texas.
- Board certified (or obtained within departmental timeline), unless exempted.
Responsibilities
- Practice clinical medicine in an exemplary manner, providing complete and thorough patient examinations.
- Perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's subspecialty.
- Develop and maintain a clinical practice for patients referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
- Provide physician staffing as appropriate for a training center and consult service.
- Visually review for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all charge documents within four working days.
- Complete patient documentation for medical records within time frames provided by institutional policy.
- Correspond with physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
- Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences.
- Share clinical responsibilities with other faculty, including inpatient service, outpatient clinic, and outpatient procedures.
- Request appropriate consultations for patients.
- Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the department.
- Participate in quality improvement and institutional effectiveness or healthcare excellence projects.
- Participate in investigation and review of best practice initiatives and clinical and institutional effectiveness projects.
- Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by the Chair.
- Represent the Department by participating or presenting at local, regional, state, and national meetings in the field of medical oncology.
- Actively engage in clinical and translational research and scholarly activities.
- Develop research programs of scholarly activities in keeping within the goals of the department.
- Instruct research support personnel in clinical trials implementation.
- Identify grants and funding sources for research, submit grants and protocols, and develop budgets.
- Act as a role model for faculty, fellows, residents, and students.
- Provide a balanced and integrated educational program for pediatric residents and fellows.
- Attend and participate in Department teaching and continuing education conferences.
- Supervise trainees as needed during their clinical rotations.
- Participate in external or extramural service such as external research committees, collaborative research activities, conferences, professional society activities, study sections, staff meetings, etc.
- Edit and/or review presentations for scientific meetings, seminars, or public dissemination of research findings.
