The Clinical Extern are unregulated healthcare providers who will be working as part of interprofessional team and provide patient-centred care under the direct and/or indirect supervision of an identified Health Professional and who reports to the unit manager. The Clinical Extern will practice in a manner consistent with the organizational Mission, Vision and Values in alignment with the outlined job description, while considering the limitations in their ability to perform controlled acts as authorized by the professional colleges. The Clinical Externs will be hired on a contract part-time basis, and the hours of work will be determined based on individual availability and unit needs which will include day/evening/night and weekend shifts. Critical Care: Intensive Care Unit (ICU) – Charlton Campus The ICU is a 21bed recently renovated state-of-the-art adult medical-surgical closed model Level 3 ICU. The ICU provides multidisciplinary patient and family centered care to critically ill patients. Our ICU goals are aligned with organizational quality and safety goals. Regional services include Nephrology, Respirology, Thoracic Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, and Mental Health. Additional busy services include General Internal Medicine, General and Vascular Surgery. The ICU accepts tertiary referrals from throughout and beyond Hamilton and South-Central Ontario needs. As such, the ICU will see a wide range of clinical presentations and diagnosis. Some examples would be a focus on nephrology, respirology, thoracic, or mental health. We support the gift of life via TGLN and actively seek consent from those that meet appropriate criteria for organ and tissue donation. The ICU has varied acuity, acuity, and complexity. Our team of interdisciplinary experts provide care for complex patients with both acute and chronic illnesses who may require basic or advanced life support. Our team values family partnership and a humanistic approach to care planning and decision making. The ICU also supports many research studies, including both qualitative and quantitative approaches; the impact of these studies has changed the outcome of health care of many not just within our city but across the world. Medical Step-Down – Charlton Campus The Medical Step-Down Unit-Cardiac Care Unit is a Level 2 critical care unit that specializes in and is designed to care for critically ill patients who require intensive care and continuous monitoring. The 16-bed unit provides a full range of critical care services apart from invasive ventilation. We have the capacity to care for a diverse patient population with various medical challenges inclusive of specialized Cardiac Care. We are home to expert nursing staff, pharmacist, central telemetry monitoring and Health Professionals that support our diverse patient population, provide close monitoring and compassionate care.
