Responsible for the nutritional care of cancer patients as outlined in federal and state regulations. Participates in state and federal facility inspections as needed. Responsible for upholding medical center policies as delineated in policy and procedure manuals. Develops nutrition related policies as needed. As part of the interdisciplinary team, responsible for patient assessment and plan of care according to regulations and department policy. Active participation in patient care conferences. Responsible for developing or obtaining patient nutrition education materials. Counsels patient, family, significant other or caregiver on prescribed diet and monitors adherence and response to therapy. Recommends appropriate feeding methods/formula or meal patterns (i.e. IDPN, supplements). Reviews monthly lab work on an individual basis and intervenes as appropriate in collaboration with patient’s physician. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Assists in development and utilization of protocols. Maintains current progress notes for all patients in compliance with facility policy to assure compliance with regulations and, if applicable, state regulations. Responsible for sharing information with the entire healthcare team. Active member of the Cancer Committee. Participates in mandatory in-services and in educational programs. Communicates with long and short-term care facilities, home care, local nutritional programs, and sales representatives and others, as indicated. Participates in department performance improvement activities as assigned and attends required training.
