The Clinical Assistant (CA) in the Family Birth Center provides direct and indirect nursing care within the role’s scope of practice, supporting a positive, patient-centered experience for families from admission through discharge. The role assists medical professionals with patient management, record keeping, notarization, birth certificate completion, paternity applications, scheduling, billing, clerical work, and delegated patient-care assignments. The OB Clinical Assistant welcomes families, registers mothers and newborns at admission, and collects identification and billing information. Patient-care duties include taking vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living, glucose monitoring, urine testing, quality-control testing and logs, and recording intake, output, and daily weights for mothers and newborns. The role also completes newborn hearing screenings; answers calls and call bells; prepares rooms and turns them over; orders supplies and equipment; reports equipment repairs; and assists with operating-room cleaning and delivery-room setup while maintaining aseptic technique. At discharge, the CA transports patients and reviews proper infant car-seat placement. The CA also helps maintain a safe environment, including infant security and camera monitoring.
