About The Position

This job supports Mercy’s philosophy of patient centered care by presenting excellent customer service and enables the facilitation of positive patient outcomes by providing nursing support to a Mercy provider. The role involves supporting the practice and acting as a liaison between providers and patients, managing phone calls, processing medication requests, and providing patient education. It also includes assisting with diagnostic procedures, documenting within the electronic health record, and adhering to safety guidelines. Specific duties for the Mercy Pediatric Cardiology Clinic include preparing patients for examination, completing patient discharge, preparing and stocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing instruments, and maintaining on-site sample medications. The role also requires reviewing medical records prior to patient visits to ensure all necessary documentation is available.

Requirements

  • Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa or compact state required.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.

Responsibilities

  • Triages patients either in person or on telephone.
  • Schedules appointments, answers questions and/or determines the need for provider intervention.
  • Supports the practice and acts as a liaison between the providers and patients.
  • Manages phone calls to patients regarding test/lab results and provides appropriate instruction for treatment, as directed by the providers.
  • Processes medication requests/changes/refills per established protocols.
  • Meets requirements for handling and disposing of bio-hazardous waste.
  • Provides patient education as needed for the scheduled test/procedures.
  • Provides assistance with diagnostic procedures and treatments as directed by the provider.
  • Effectively documents within the electronic health record.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
  • Rooms and prepares patient for examination. This includes histories, vitals, reason for visit, presenting symptoms and current medication list.
  • Completes discharge of patient from exam room. This may include written instructions, scheduling a follow-up appointment, providing referral information or scheduling patients for testing procedures and providing instructions.
  • Prepares the exam and treatment rooms.
  • Maintains and stocks supplies.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments in accordance with infection control and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintains on-site sample medications according to Mercy's policies and procedures.
  • Reviews medical records prior to patient visits to ensure physician/provider has appropriate history to see the patient, if not, facilitates receipt of documentation, testing results, and imaging.
