About The Position

The Climber performs tree climbing, pruning, and removal according to the Foreperson’s directives. The role also includes ground work, loading and unloading trucks, operating and maintaining assigned tools and equipment, and protecting employees and the public by following safe work practices. Storm work and out-of-town travel for storm restoration may be required. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring the employee to pass a background check and drug screen as required for the job. The employee must meet I-9 work authorization requirements; the employer participates in E-Verify.

Requirements

• Previous experience in electric utility vegetation management, construction, logging, landscaping, mechanical, or military industries is preferred.
• Previous climbing experience is preferred.
• High school diploma or equivalent education is preferred.
• Working knowledge of knots, ropes, and rigging devices used in tree trimming and removal operations.
• Ability to climb and descend trees using rope and a safety saddle.
• Ability to administer and implement emergency rescue techniques, including tree rescue and applicable first-aid techniques.
• Familiarity with electrical hazards and appropriate operating procedures near electrical conductors, and with aerial rescue techniques for emergencies aloft.
• Ability to work and maneuver at considerable heights in varying and adverse weather conditions.
• Physical strength and agility, good balance and depth perception, and ability to hear verbal instructions from a distance.
• Ability to quickly move away from potential danger.
• Ability to obtain and maintain first-aid certification and CPR.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Ability to pass a background check and drug screen as required for this safety-sensitive position.
• Must meet I-9 work authorization requirements.

Responsibilities

• Follow and help enforce safe practices and rules.
• Climb, prune, and remove trees according to the Foreperson’s directives.
• Load and unload trucks with logs, brush, and debris; lift and feed brush into a brush chipper.
• Perform ground work using hand saws, pole saws, pruners, hand pruners, loppers, and gas-powered chain saws.
• Inspect assigned tools and equipment and ensure they are in proper working condition.
• Protect employees and the public from hazards by enforcing safe job practices, keeping the work area clean and orderly, and maintaining frequent voice communication with co-workers.
• Perform storm-work duties as needed.
• Travel out of town for storm restoration work when needed.
