About The Position

The Utqiagvik Trial Court is seeking a motivated and dedicated individual to join their team as a Clerk of Court 3. This position is responsible for supervising the daily operations of trial court activities at the court location, including oversight of records, personnel, fiscal matters, and facilities. The incumbent provides leadership and technical support in court functions such as record keeping, calendaring, accounting, and jury management in accordance with statutes, court rules, and state and local directives. This role also serves as the primary trainer for Court Case Managers, working closely with the Rural Court Administrator to coordinate staff training. The Clerk of Court 3 monitors staff work quality, provides correction and training, reviews leave requests, and coordinates staffing schedules to ensure adequate coverage. The incumbent oversees use of the case management system and related court operations, including in-court processes, accounting, exhibits, and records on appeal, and responds to inquiries from judges, attorneys, law enforcement, other courts, and the public. This position also supports courtroom technology operations, including audio recording backup monitoring and basic troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment as needed. Additionally, this position involves interviewing, hiring, evaluating, and disciplining subordinate employees, maintaining supervisory working files, preparing performance evaluations, and ensuring staff receive necessary training.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate AND two years of advanced general clerical or legal clerical work experience (e.g., Court Case Manager 1 or 2, Court Supervisor, Clerk of Court, Chambers Judicial Assistant, or Chief Deputy Clerk with the Alaska Court System or similar work experience with another employer).
  • OR A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in any field AND one year of advanced general clerical or legal clerical work experience (e.g., Court Case Manager 1 or 2, Court Supervisor, Clerk of Court, Chambers Judicial Assistant, or Chief Deputy Clerk with the Alaska Court System or similar work experience with another employer).
  • OR A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in business administration, public administration, criminal justice, or a closely related field.
  • Experience as a supervisor or team leader.
  • Outstanding work habits regarding attendance, punctuality, and use of leave.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service, in person and on the telephone.
  • Experience performing multiple tasks with frequent interruptions and remaining calm, organized, and accurate.
  • Experience working independently and as part of a team in a detail-oriented environment.
  • Experience establishing priorities.
  • Proficiency in using MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • A letter of interest, completed per instructions.
  • Post-secondary transcripts, if using education to meet minimum qualifications.
  • A list of three (3) professional references who have had supervisory authority over you, including your most recent supervisor, along with their daytime contact phone numbers and email addresses.
  • Certification that you have a legal right to accept employment in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Initiating and leading regular staff meetings on training issues and court operations.
  • Ensuring court case managers receive training in all aspects of their jobs.
  • Maintaining trial court accounting records and petty cash fund.
  • Ensuring timely deposit and disbursement of trust account funds.
  • Approving the accuracy of bills and submitting them for payment.
  • Coordinating with facilities departments and local agencies regarding general maintenance and building improvements.
  • Working with the landlord on facilities problems.
  • Acting as property custodian for the trial court.
  • Overseeing the ordering of supplies and forms.
  • Working closely with IS staff on technology-related matters.
  • Participating in the budgetary process for equipment and facility upgrades.
