About The Position

The Apex Police Department is seeking motivated individuals to serve as Civilian Traffic Investigators, responding to non-injury motor vehicle collisions and conducting thorough, property-damage-only crash investigations. In this role, you’ll manage traffic control, enforce local ordinances, and work closely with supervisors, communications personnel, outside agencies, and the public. The position requires sound judgment, initiative, and professionalism, even in potentially hazardous situations. Investigators wear a department-issued uniform and equipment, operate under NCGS §160A-499.6, and do not possess arrest powers.

Requirements

  • Graduation from High School or GED.
  • Possession of a North Carolina driver’s license and the ability to maintain a valid North Carolina class “C” driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain certification as a Civilian Traffic Investigator from the North Carolina Justice Academy within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain certification to utilize DCI to investigate drivers’ licenses and license plates within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to assigned calls for service involving traffic problems, parking issues, and other traffic concerns.
  • Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations of traffic collisions (excluding collisions resulting in personal injury).
  • Interviews persons having potential knowledge or information concerning investigations being conducted.
  • Collects, packages, and preserves physical evidence and found property of investigations.
  • Prepares written reports and field notes of investigations.
  • Testifies in court concerning investigations.
  • Provides traffic control at the scene of fires, disorders, demonstrations, natural disasters, and related incidents to ensure public safety and the efficient delivery of emergency services.
  • Provides traffic management.
  • Assists victims of traffic accidents.
  • Performs rudimentary first aid as required.
  • Performs community service functions, including Community Relations presentations.
  • Provides the public with information on ordinances, regulations, and police services.
  • Enforces parking control ordinances.
  • Performs special assignments as directed.
  • Works rotating shifts as needed.
  • Operates a vehicle during both the day and night under a variety of conditions.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
