About The Position

The Civil Rights Investigator/Specialist serves in the Office of Equity and Civil Rights (ECR) within the university’s Division of Institutional Equity. The Investigator’s primary responsibility will be to investigate and produce comprehensive reports regarding complaints of sexual misconduct, harassment, discrimination and retaliation involving students, faculty or staff including interviewing parties/witnesses, collecting evidence, and drafting high quality investigation reports, and documents within established timelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in conducting investigations and/or resolutions of civil rights (specifically Title VI, Title VII, and/or Title IX) complaints.
  • Familiarity with higher education and/or civil rights related conduct processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ADEA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Clery Act, and VAWA.
  • Ability to prioritize work appropriately while anticipating deadlines, as well as the ability to meet established deadlines timely.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as with other administrative and academic departments, faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
  • Demonstrated understanding and sensitivity toward experiences and expressions of trauma caused by sexual violence and harassment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with confidential and highly sensitive information while maintaining confidentiality in compliance with university policies, procedures, and state and federal regulations.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.

Nice To Haves

  • Juris Doctorate or Master’s Degree in student affairs, higher education leadership, social work, law, or related field preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience working in higher education.

Responsibilities

  • This position requires working with confidential and highly sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality in compliance with university policies, procedures, and state and federal regulations.
  • Conduct prompt and thorough investigations, including development of an investigative plan, identifying and interviewing witnesses, asking appropriate questions during interviews using trauma informed methodology to gather information about alleged incidents of misconduct, discrimination, retaliation or harassment. Provide parties with information about the investigatory process.
  • Prepare comprehensive and timely written reports of information obtained during an investigation.
  • Prepare for and participate in meetings or hearings related to results of investigations.
  • Assist in maintaining case management system, spreadsheets, and other data related to investigations; gathering and securing information and data, keeping accurate and thorough records and notes of the investigatory process assess trends, and identify areas of concern.
  • Attend ongoing training on discrimination and harassment, Title IX, and other federal laws and regulations, investigative techniques (including trauma-informed interviewing); Stay abreast of regulations and statutes relating to discrimination, retaliation, harassment, sexual misconduct and gender-based violence including, but not limited to, Title II, Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the ADA, the FMLA, VAWA, and Clery.
  • Assist in the development and dissemination of educational materials and training regarding the investigation process tailored to faculty, staff, and students; Provide training and outreach to members of the University community.
