About The Position

Kimley-Horn is seeking an Engineer-in-Training (EI/EIT) to join our Roadway team in Raleigh, NC, with a focus on roadway drainage and stormwater design. This role offers the opportunity to work on complex transportation projects while developing strong technical and project delivery skills alongside experienced roadway and drainage engineers. This is not a remote position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • EI or EIT certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire).
  • 0–2 years of relevant internship or co-op experience in roadway, drainage, transportation, or civil design.
  • Fundamental understanding of hydrology and hydraulics related to roadway drainage.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Interest in pursuing PE licensure and long-term career growth in roadway engineering.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, OpenRoads, or MicroStation preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and analysis of roadway drainage systems, including storm drain networks, culverts, roadside ditches, and conveyance systems.
  • Support preparation of drainage calculations, exhibits, and reports using hydrologic and hydraulic principles.
  • Assist with roadway plan production, including grading, profiles, sections, and construction details.
  • Perform engineering analyses related to stormwater management, floodplain considerations, and erosion control.
  • Prepare and modify design drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D, OpenRoads, or MicroStation under the supervision of licensed engineers.
  • Coordinate with internal disciplines (roadway, traffic, surface water, utilities) to support integrated project delivery.
  • Assist with agency coordination and plan development in accordance with NCDOT and local municipal standards.
  • Participate in quality control reviews and support project teams through various design phases.
