About The Position

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Civil Drainage/Stormwater Engineer for our Herndon, VA office. Be involved in projects with our Civil Engineering Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. The successful candidate will support planning, analysis, design, compliance, and preparation of contract documents for construction of drainage and stormwater infrastructure, including conveyance systems (inlets and storm drains, minor and major ditches, culverts/cross pipes), flood control structures, stormwater management facilities, and associated restoration efforts. They will support the design effort on specific tasks with oversight, including a basic understanding of design requirements and completing associated tasks, including cost estimates. They will be involved in coordination discussions with other design disciplines. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Internship or relevant education experience in engineering discipline and prior drainage and/or stormwater design experience.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering principles, practices, process, and design.
  • Basic proficiency with discipline-specific production software (i.e., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, OpenRoads).
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Effective attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Commitment to upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Nice To Haves

  • EIT or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • Experience working with state/county/local/municipal clients in the Northern Virginia region.
  • Basic knowledge of roadway and utility design principles, practices, and processes.
  • Affiliation with local or national engineering organizations.
  • Basic proficiency with additional software packages ArcGIS, PCSWMM, HEC-HMS, BlueBeam.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional civil engineering on roadway, stormwater, and site projects for multiple federal, state, and local clients.
  • Develop stormwater models and perform hydraulic and hydrologic analysis using PondPack and other industry standard engineering software.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations, which includes developing exhibits/maps and supporting calculations.
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; preparing construction phasing plans, and updating infrastructure layout plans that require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Calculate costs and quantities of material/equipment/labor, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications, permit applications, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
  • Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-discipline team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects.
  • Regularly coordinate and communicate with project teams, manager, and civil team. Attend and participate in project team meetings.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
