About The Position

Under close supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and skilled duties in support of assigned program functions. The Trainee I/II position is designed to provide incumbents with opportunities to explore and gain exposure to various career paths and options, job readiness, and training opportunities. The City Corps Leader Trainee I is a classification assigned to staff 18 years of age and older. Incumbents learn and are assigned a variety of duties related to community and public service projects. This position is distinguished from the City Corps Leader Trainee II by the need for direct supervision and the level of training required. The City Corps Leader Trainee II is the journey-level classification of the series. This position is expected to work independently and provide project supervision over the Leader Trainee I; typically involves more responsibility, such as overseeing specific activities. Incumbents learn and are assigned a variety of duties related to community and public service projects.

Requirements

  • Basic awareness of community, recreational and human services programs and team activities; basic math.
  • Perform a variety of duties involving City Corps programs and participants.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, members of the public and others encountered in the course of work.
  • Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities.
  • Required to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, climb, kneel, reach, push, pull, grasp, pick, pinch, ride and perform similar body movements.
  • Lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, heat, and cold.
  • Work around slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, heat, cold and inclement weather conditions.
  • May be exposed to fumes, dust and air contaminants.
  • Must be 16 years of age (Trainee I).
  • Completion of Sophomore year in High School or be enrolled in an educational program during their employment and be actively developing and pursuing a vocational path (Trainee I).
  • Must be 18-25 years of age (Trainee II).
  • One year of paid experience as a City Corp Trainee I (Trainee II).
  • Expected to be enrolled in an educational program during their employment and be actively developing a vocational path (Trainee II).
  • A valid First Aid / Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate must be obtained within six months of employment.
  • May be required to possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License depending on assignment within twelve months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Observes and participates in various career-centered programs.
  • Participates in job trainings, field visits and events that provide exposure to different fields of work.
  • Participates in and oversees lower level Trainees and activities related to event preparation including logistics and maintenance.
  • Participates in and assists with overseeing staff performing activities related to Department programs such as outdoor field preparation, recycling program efforts, and various recreational events.
  • Responds to questions and concerns from the public and program participants; provides information as appropriate and resolves concerns.
  • Participates in and leads teams in broad areas of community and public service support within the City, including supporting various City Departments, as well as engaging with community members and outside agencies.
  • Mentors other City Corps program participants.
  • Leads recreational activities for youth members.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
