About The Position

The purpose of the position is to provide support for the daily operations of the Youth Services department of the library, to perform paraprofessional library duties, and to perform related work as required. The position works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under the general supervision of the Youth Services Librarian.

Requirements

  • Ability to relate to children, teens, and families.
  • Ability to become familiar with the needs and interests of children and teens.
  • Ability to interact with and assist the public in a friendly and responsive manner.
  • Extensive knowledge of computers, their operating systems, and programs likely to be used in libraries, including familiarity with the Internet, word processing and databases.
  • Ability to perform in front of groups of various ages and to maintain control of large numbers of people.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to set priorities and be self-motivated.
  • Strong organizational skills for a customer-service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to retain a valid S.C. driver’s license.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Related-experience required: 1 year.
  • Required to work nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Providing services and programs to youth and parents, both in the library locations and at events off-site, under the guidance of the Youth Services Librarian.
  • Planning and presenting programs and special events for children, young adults, and special-interest groups, etc., as assigned by the Youth Services Librarian.
  • Participating in collection development and management; selecting books and other library materials; weeding damaged or outdated materials from the juvenile and young adult collections.
  • Providing readers' advisory services to patrons for juvenile and young adult materials; answering reference questions.
  • Promoting the library, its services, and programs to the public in a variety of formats; giving presentations to various community/civic/school groups and conducting library tours.
  • Assisting the Youth Services Librarian with planning, promoting, and providing outreach services to local schools, daycares, community and special-interest organizations, etc., as appropriate.
  • Preparing book lists, website information, and promotional literature on library services and materials as assigned.
  • Attending continuing education classes, professional meetings, conferences, seminars and/or workshops as assigned to maintain knowledge of current theories and trends in youth services in public library operations and technology.
  • Compiling data for statistical reports as required.
  • Assisting in ensuring the proper maintenance and use of Library equipment; troubleshooting and performing minor maintenance on equipment as required.
  • Performing circulation duties when requested. Checking materials in and out; registering patrons for library cards; shelving materials; placing holds on materials as requested; collecting and receiving fines and fees, etc.
  • Assisting library patrons in using various resources and equipment of the library, including the Internet; interpreting library policies and procedures to the public.
  • Attending staff, committee, County and community meetings as appropriate.
