The Charge RN is an entry-level management position responsible for coordinating care on designated shifts and providing leadership to unit staff in patient care. As a Registered Nurse, the Charge RN implements the nursing process for patients from infancy through geriatrics and is responsible for care within the parameters of the Kentucky Nurse Practice Act. The role promotes positive patient outcomes and quality care, and supports change through active involvement in unit-based and hospital shared-governance councils. Guided by national professional nursing standards, the Charge RN uses critical thinking and appropriate nursing judgment, collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to improve outcomes, and serves as a role model through participation in professional development, teaching, and learning across the healthcare continuum. The role is in the 10-bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), which provides intensive-level care for patients with severe cardiac conditions, including severe coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction, post-cardiac arrest, cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmias requiring continuous monitoring. Common equipment and monitoring include balloon pumps, Impellas, temporary pacemakers, Swan-Ganz catheters, and arterial lines. The unit generally staffs at a one- or two-nurse-to-patient ratio and cares for adults through geriatric patients. This is a full-time position of 36 hours per week, consisting of three 12-hour night shifts from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., with every third weekend required. New graduate nurses are welcome to apply, although two years of relevant patient care experience are listed as required. A sign-on bonus is available to eligible experienced critical care nurses.
