About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Music, the Choir Director is responsible for managing the parish choir for Sunday and liturgical celebrations. The choir director assists the Director of Music in ensuring that all music is appropriate and acceptable to the Catholic Church. The role requires performing as a lay ecclesial minister in support of the parish’s spiritual and pastoral mission, abiding by Catholic principles in both professional and private life. The director must ensure choir members are well-versed in Church liturgy, rubrics, and protocol, maintaining an environment of respect and solemnity. This includes meeting regularly with choir members, providing training, recruiting musicians, planning rehearsals, copying music, and providing music for accompanists. The position also involves notifying choir members of upcoming music and other relevant information, and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • A working knowledge of, and a strong commitment to the mission of the Catholic Church.
  • Must be a practicing Catholic in full communion with the Church.
  • Working knowledge of the Liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church and traditions.
  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written.
  • Excellent human relations interpersonal skills.
  • Exercise courtesy to fellow employees, parishioners, and the public.
  • Must be a self-starter.
  • Well organized.
  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure choir members are well-versed in the liturgy, duties, and rubrics of the Church.
  • Ensure choir members are aware of Church protocol and maintain an environment of respect and solemnity.
  • Meet regularly and maintain open communication with choir members and musicians.
  • Provide training to choir members and musicians as necessary.
  • Recruit and form musicians and choir members.
  • Plan rehearsals and copy music as needed.
  • Provide music for accompanists.
  • Notify choir members of upcoming music and other notifications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
