About The Position

North Texas Behavioral Health Authority (NTBHA), based in Dallas, is responsible for developing a collaborative system of care for children, adolescents, and adults with severe mental illness and other serious emotional disturbances, as well as those experiencing a substance use disorder. This position's actions and work must align with NTBHA values and goals, regulations, and policies and procedures, and meet all documentation standards and regulatory requirements. The Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct and indirect nursing care to individuals served in NTBHA’s Children's Crisis Respite Program. The RN ensures that all care and procedures adhere to the Texas Nursing Practice Act and the Board of Nursing’s Standards of Nursing Practice (Rule §217.11), supporting each individual’s health, safety, and recovery within a therapeutic environment. This position involves on-call responsibilities and may require occasional evening or weekend support. The RN works collaboratively with behavioral health staff, case managers, and medical providers in a structured, person-centered environment. This position is classified as exempt and requires flexibility in scheduling to meet organizational needs, including adjusting work hours as necessary to ensure job responsibilities are completed. Travel is required as part of this role’s duties. Travel can vary from 20% to 100% per day. This would include all counties within NTBHA Catchment area (Dallas, Ellis, Hunt, Kaufman, Navarro & Rockwall Counties). This role may be required to use a fleet vehicle and/or a personal vehicle for business needs. This may include, but not limited to field & home visits, offsite meetings, co-located sites and/or pick up items for business needs, etc. If your program requires transport of individuals, this would only be allowed with a company vehicle and approval from management.

Requirements

  • Current Texas RN license in good standing.
  • Strong assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  • Ability to respond effectively in crisis situations.
  • Expert knowledge of medications used in the treatment of mental illness.
  • Ability to adhere to established policy and procedure.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in behavioral health, crisis, or residential settings preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Complete comprehensive assessments to determine if admission to the program is appropriate.
  • Accurately and completely report and document the individual’s status, including signs and symptoms, nursing care rendered, physician or prescriber orders, administration of medications and treatments, and individual’s response(s) and contacts with other care team members concerning significant events regarding the individual’s status.
  • Provide on-call support for after-hours, non-emergency medical events to determine whether on-site intervention is necessary and where the individual should be transported for triage or treatment (e.g., emergency department, local clinic), follow appropriate procedures for visits to emergency departments, local clinics, or hospital admissions.
  • Immediately contact or assist in contacting 9-1-1 for possible life-threatening emergencies, and to follow up until the event is resolved and complete all required documentation.
  • Collaborate with the care team to evaluate all active medications and treatments.
  • Understand the rationale for and effects of medications and treatments and provide medication education to each individual when medications are prescribed or changed.
  • Administers medication injections.
  • Works with insurance companies, pharmacies, and/or Patient Assistance Programs to ensure that individuals get their medications as prescribed and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to travel to different facilities throughout the week to assist in individuals’ care.
  • Will maintain cooperative working relationships with all agency staff and community partners.
  • Maintain client confidentiality.
  • Participate as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team to support stabilization, recovery, and safe transition planning.
  • Must be able to work on and have knowledge of a PC (personal computer).
  • Advanced Microsoft Office Suite skills - Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc., with an ability to become familiar with company-specific programs and software.
  • Duties and projects may be assigned or changed to meet business needs.
