About The Position

This is an unpaid internship opportunity at Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI), a leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing healing, justice, and wholeness to people and communities. The intern will support the Foster Care Program and Family Finding Specialist through family engagement, permanency support activities, and community resource coordination. This role offers hands-on experience in child welfare services, permanency planning, family finding practices, and case support activities, providing meaningful exposure to social work and community services. The intern will assist with planning and coordinating events that support the organization's mission and ensure permanency activities and family engagement practices align with LSSI's missions, values, and goals.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
  • Interest in working with children and families in a supportive setting.
  • Must pass a criminal and CANTS (DCFS) background check.
  • Must be available for group supervision, team meetings and agency trainings.
  • Must provide proof of current car insurance.
  • Must demonstrate initiative, professionalism, and willingness to learn.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and documentation systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, organizing, and coordinating fundraising and community engagement events.
  • Support efforts to ensure events align with LSSI’s mission, values, and organizational priorities.
  • Assist with event logistics including scheduling, vendor coordination, space preparation, and volunteer coordination.
  • Help develop event materials such as invitations, promotional materials, and information resources.
  • Assist with donor and community outreach efforts to support event participation and engagement.
  • Track event-related data including attendance, donations, sponsorships, and community participation.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate records and documentation related to fundraising activities and event outcomes.
  • Support post-event follow-up activities including donor acknowledgment, reporting, and evaluation.
  • Participate in team meetings and supervision to review progress and receive guidance.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all organizational policies and procedures.
