The job of a child life specialist entails giving support and assistance to children as well as their families during the child's journey with a life-limiting illness. The child life specialist especially offers emotional and physical support, working together with the medical team attending on children, their siblings and families. These professionals work as members of an inter-disciplinary team which comprises of physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists and teachers. Utilize and navigate patient information in the electronic or paper health record. Perform assessments, evaluations, and establish therapeutic and function goals for patients and caregivers related to child life in accordance with the interdisciplinary plan of care. Maintain up to date patent records to ensure that problems, plans, interventions, and goals are accurately and clearly stated and changes are reflected as they occur. Identify and address comfort care needs. Prepare patients in developmentally appropriate manner for medical procedures, tests, and treatments. The ability to support infants, children, youth, and families in coping with stressful events. Provide holistic, family-centered care across treatment settings to improve the quality of life.
