About The Position

The Chief Well-being Officer (CWO) for the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) enterprise will oversee the enterprise strategy to enable all MUSC employees and learners to thrive. The CWO will oversee the Center for Workplace Well-being, providing well-being expert guidance on the development, implementation, and coordination of efforts that foster personal well-being, efficiency of work, and a culture of well-being. The CWO will report directly to the Enterprise Chief Human Resources Officer for MUSC/MUSC Health and will also serve as a member of “Team SC” (executive committee of MUSC Health) and an ad hoc member of the Provost’s Council.

Requirements

  • A terminal degree (MD/DO/PhD) in an appropriate discipline
  • 10 years of administrative leadership experience
  • 5 of those years in the area of healthcare workforce well-being for an academic health care center or health system.
  • Expertise regarding the drivers of burnout and tactics to foster professional satisfaction among the healthcare workforce.
  • Strong written and presentation skills ensuring cohesive communication of complex materials to a wide variety of constituents.
  • Excellent strategic and operational planning skills, analytical abilities, and organizational development skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead dynamic and progressive teams through change.
  • Demonstrated record of success managing in complex organizations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills enabling effective interaction with a wide variety of individuals and audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Strong time management/organization skills with the ability to effectively manage competing priorities.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to consistently exercise sound judgement and initiative in a highly complex clinical and business environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous system-level CWO experience strongly preferred.
  • An advanced degree in management or administration is preferred (e.g., MBA, MMM, MHCDS).

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic vision, planning, and direction to the development, implementation, and evaluation of initiatives to improve faculty/staff/care team member health and well-being outcomes.
  • Manage and directs the Center for Workplace Well-being team and faculty well-being leads.
  • Meet regularly with leadership throughout the enterprise to identify drivers of burnout and dissatisfaction and implement interventions to promote well-being and professional satisfaction.
  • Ensure the inventory of well-being programs and services – the Well-being Collective – is up-to-date, periodically reviewed, and adequately measured for effectiveness.
  • Integrate efforts with other relevant departments, including but not limited to, human resources, patient experience, employee health, GME, quality and safety, communications and marketing, external affairs, physician/APP/nursing administration, information services, EAP, spiritual care, Arts in Healing, performance excellence, university leadership, office of innovation, and legal.
  • Establish appropriate well-being metrics and frequency of monitoring measures that will be utilized to identify high need cohorts and to determine efficacy of programming and resources.
  • Collaborate with internal media resources to effectively communicate with the MUSC community about existing well-being resources/activities.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the enterprise on matters of well-being and develop a message that enhances a sense of community.
  • Continue to participate, contribute and direct national efforts aimed at promoting healthcare workforce and University well-being, establishing MUSC as a leader in the area.
  • Work with appropriate PIs to conduct research, generate publications, and garner grant funding to create and share new knowledge in the wellbeing field.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Provost for Education, Innovation and Student Life.
  • Provide support for external accreditation of workforce well-being, if appropriate.
  • Work closely with a designated Development Office representative on fundraising initiatives that support well-being activities and programs.
  • Collaborate with outside organizations, faculty and staff on well-being events and programs.
  • Oversee the Enterprise Well-being Advisory Council composed of varied internal stakeholders and leaders that will meet periodically to provide input on implementation of well-being initiatives.
  • Periodically provide updates and program overviews to President’s Council and other executive leadership meetings throughout the enterprise.
  • Periodically meet with the President of the Medical University for well-being updates.
  • Develop the annual CWO budget request and advocate for its approval with the various entities in accordance with each entity’s budget cycle and approval process.
  • Leverage data and predictive modeling to craft new well-being initiatives, and to modulate investment in initiatives based on their success.
  • Responsible for personnel actions, including hiring, performance management and terminations.
  • Responsible for aligning departmental strategy and direction with the overall goals of the organization.
  • Develop policies, practices, and procedures that have a significant impact on the organization.
