About The Position

The Chief Strategy Officer will be responsible for strategic planning, business development and population health for MercyOne. Accountability includes the assurance that MercyOne’s vision, mission, and values are evident in the strategic planning, management, operations, and organizational culture of the network partners. This individual will be expected to attend board meetings and report on current activity as it relates to strategic initiatives and the progress of the organization on strategic planning goals. This Chief Strategy Officer will oversee a small number of staff but will be expected to utilize system resources to achieve key goals and objectives within the system by working in a highly matrixed environment. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Health Administration, or related field required.
  • Minimum of ten (10) to fifteen (15) years of related business experience in a corporate development, consulting, strategic planning or financial planning role, preferably in a healthcare environment.
  • Must possess knowledge of the healthcare environment and key issues associated with hospitals, ambulatory care and physician alignment, in addition to an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of healthcare strategic financial planning.
  • Strong management skills and the ability to produce and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong strategic planning, facilitation and development skills; a proven track record working with cross functional teams.
  • Significant experience in project management, comprehensive business planning, financial analysis and modeling.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal skills with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with executives and professional staff.
  • Comfort with a high visibility role and track record of positive external relationships.
  • Ability to work in a complex matrix reporting environment.
  • Excellent customer service orientation skills are necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of region personnel, governance, physicians, patients and community groups.
  • Strong leadership/influencing skills are required with the ability to work effectively within a system and influence others and achieve results.
  • Advanced interpersonal, management and organizational skills are necessary.
  • A personal presence which is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, values and guiding behaviors of Trinity Health.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
  • Multi-hospital experience, experience in working in a complex delivery system, and experience with medical group or health insurance are strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as the business strategy partner for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MercyOne.
  • Oversees and implements an effective strategic planning process for MercyOne consistent and integrated with the Trinity Health strategy and planning process.
  • Leads efforts to create an integrated delivery system across the continuum of care and realize market consolidation opportunities, working closely with the Trinity Health M&A and Partnership Development team.
  • Develops and diversifies ambulatory, post-acute, retail and on-line health services to capture commercial revenues shifting to non-hospital settings and create future-ready models of care that optimize profitability under a value-based health care system.
  • Leads MercyOne in development of strategy and business plans in alignment with Trinity Health Mission and Strategic Plan.
  • Plans and develops new ventures, major programs, joint ventures, and significant market growth initiatives within the region, consistent with and supportive of the Trinity Health’s Mission and Strategic Plan.
  • Works with Trinity Health planning and M&A teams on significant transactions to support the HM growth and positioning.
  • Identifies and develops appropriate, low-cost, high-quality health delivery responses to community healthcare needs.
  • Assures patient care needs are met by developing a comprehensive delivery network within the region.
  • Participates with leaders from the governing body, management, medical staff, and employees in developing the mission, strategic plan, governing policies, and standards.
  • Provides expert internal consultation on emerging healthcare trends.
  • Works to address strategic initiatives including physician alignment, new contract development, and further development of the specific service lines or services that make sense for the individual entities or the system as a whole.
  • Works closely with Marketing & Communications in the promotion of programs and services that enhance the growth of programs and services in the markets served.
  • Assures all MercyOne's activities are directed toward the achievement of the mission and values of the organization.
  • Develops strategies and operational processes to implement value-based care.
  • Lead organizational efforts to be successful in population health.
  • Develops an analytical system and corresponding methodologies to measure quality, cost and overall effectiveness of population health initiatives.
  • Collaborates and develops payor strategies to optimize quality and economic return in value-based payment models.
  • Performs any other duty that may be necessary in the best interest of the organization to provide for quality in patient care and exercises such other powers as determined by the Board of Directors or the President/CEO.
