About The Position

Family Promise is the nation's leading nonprofit dedicated to preventing and ending family homelessness. Through our national federated network of nearly 180 locations, Family Promise mobilizes community stakeholders to provide prevention and shelter services, housing stabilization services, and affordable permanent housing to families with children in a housing crisis. As the organization enters its next chapter of growth and national impact, we are seeking a Chief Strategy Officer who will lead this effort. This proven strategic leader will bridge vision and execution to be a defining voice in advancing the bold, coordinated strategy to meet the unmet need for prevention and shelter in communities across the nation. The Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) is a senior executive responsible for shaping and driving Family Promise’s long-term strategy to expand its impact in preventing and ending family homelessness. Reporting directly to the CEO, the CSO leads enterprise-wide strategic planning, innovation, business development, and alignment across the national organization and Affiliate network. This role bridges vision and execution, translating bold ideas into actionable strategies that strengthen Family Promise’s programs, networks, partnerships, and funding model. The CSO is a strategic member of the senior leadership team with direct department responsibilities and serves as a connector across teams, ensuring alignment while identifying opportunities for growth, innovation, and system-level change. Success in this role requires executive presence, systems-level thinking, strong leadership and influencing skills, and experience turning strategy into measurable results at scale.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in strategy, social impact, nonprofit management, or related fields
  • Successful experience in fundraising, major gift development, or business development to drive revenue growth
  • Proven track record of leading strategic planning and execution in complex, multi-stakeholder environments
  • Leadership experience in a fast-growing organization managing significant scale and change
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data into actionable insights
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to inspire staff, Affiliates, funders, and partners
  • Comfort working with faith-based partners and diverse communities

Nice To Haves

  • Deep understanding of housing instability, homelessness, or adjacent human services sectors preferred
  • Experience working with national teams or federated models strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of a multi-year strategic plan focused on preventing and ending family homelessness.
  • Identify opportunities to expand Family Promise’s impact, including geographic expansion, program expansion, and increased service impact.
  • Understand emerging trends in housing, homelessness prevention, emergency shelter, and stabilization services to inform strategy.
  • Identify strong business models for social enterprise opportunities and other strategies to ensure long-term sustainability.
  • Guide long-term visioning that positions Family Promise as a national leader in family homelessness solutions.
  • Champion a data-driven culture that uses evidence to guide decision-making and demonstrate impact.
  • Oversee strategy related to data systems, performance measurement, and impact reporting.
  • Strengthen the organization’s ability to communicate impact to funders and stakeholders.
  • Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships across philanthropy, government, and the private sector.
  • Oversee multifaceted marketing, communications, and PR efforts to increase recognition and engagement across the country.
  • Support the development of new funding streams, including major initiatives and national campaigns.
  • Lead strategy for government relations and advocacy to advance policies that prevent family homelessness.
  • Position Family Promise as a thought leader through strategic storytelling and data-informed narratives.
  • Ensure implementation of the organization’s growth through clear strategic priorities and KPIs.
  • Optimize the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to ensure continued alignment between the strategic goals and the business development work.
  • Act as a cross-functional leader, ensuring accountability and value creation for coordinated enterprise-wide execution.
  • Support the CEO and leadership team in prioritizing and sequencing major strategic initiatives.
  • Lead organizational change initiatives tied to growth, innovation, and evolving service models.
  • Foster a culture of learning, experimentation, and continuous improvement.
  • Promote shared ownership and collaboration across teams and with the network.
  • Help staff and stakeholders “co-create the future” of Family Promise through inclusive and participatory approaches.
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the CEO. leadership team, and Board.
  • Work closely with internal teams and affiliates to align strategy with on-the-ground realities.
  • Influence without direct authority, building buy-in across a distributed national network.
  • Balance external opportunity-seeking with a deep understanding of internal capacity and operations
