Chief of Staff to the CEO

Nubank•Palo Alto, CA

About The Position

The Chief of Staff to the CEO is the closest partner to David Vélez, Founder and CEO of Nubank, and a force multiplier for his agenda. The role ensures the CEO spends time on the highest-priority matters, is prepared for important conversations, and follows through on commitments. It provides candid, apolitical counsel about the organization and uses sound judgment to escalate issues and maximize the CEO’s impact. Discipline, rigor, and follow-through are central to the role, which also reduces coordination costs and helps the organization move faster. This is an individual-contributor role built on trust, access to confidential and sensitive context, and the judgment and discretion to handle it appropriately. The Chief of Staff works closely with the C-Level and the teams that support it, and reports directly to the CEO. Success is measured by the CEO’s time spent on high-impact topics, the quality of Board and investor preparation, the rigor of follow-through, faster decisions with less pre-alignment, and the trust of the MTeam.

  • Comfort using AI tools as part of daily work.
  • Fluent English is mandatory.
  • Exceptional discipline and rigor, including reliable follow-through and on-time delivery.
  • Strong analytical judgment, ability to learn quickly and structure complex problems, manage multiple workstreams, and communicate concisely.
  • Strong presence and relationship-building ability, including credibility with senior leaders and engagement across organizational levels.
  • High ownership, a high bar for work, and willingness to respectfully challenge the CEO when needed.
  • Discretion and careful handling of confidential information and material non-public information.

Nice To Haves

  • MBA or equivalent.
  • Industry knowledge in financial services, fintech, or technology.
  • Exposure to public-company environments, including earnings, investor relations, or governance.

Responsibilities

  • Own the CEO’s operating rhythm by translating company priorities into a focused agenda, reassessing what merits the CEO’s attention, and running MTeam forums and rituals with clear purposes, appropriate participants, and documented outcomes.
  • Ensure agendas, pre-reads, and follow-ups are delivered on time.
  • Independently assess proposals, challenge assumptions, and synthesize financial, operating, and organizational evidence into recommendations for CEO and MTeam decisions.
  • Prepare briefs and decision memos, ensuring accuracy, logic, and clarity before materials reach the CEO or MTeam.
  • Maintain an accurate record of decisions, commitments, owners, and deadlines from CEO and MTeam forums; follow up until items are closed, hold leaders accountable, and escalate risks or slippage early.
  • Bring leaders together around shared priorities, make dependencies and competing interests explicit, and lead negotiations on sequencing and resource trade-offs.
  • Ensure recommendations reflect company-level outcomes and escalate unresolved choices with clear options to help teams align faster and reduce pre-meetings, pre-reads, and approval layers.
  • Lead selected high-priority, cross-functional CEO-sponsored initiatives where ownership is unclear or coordination requires the CEO’s office.
  • Provide candid counsel, build relationships across the MTeam and company to surface friction and misalignment, and represent the CEO in selected forums.
