About The Position

Change.org is searching for a Chief of Staff to the COO to partner with the COO as a senior strategic operator to ensure the Ops function executes against the company's highest-priority initiatives — translating strategy into action, building operational clarity, and enabling the COO to focus on the highest-leverage decisions. Change.org is the world’s largest platform for democracy. At a time when dissatisfaction with democracy globally is at an all-time high, we’re investing heavily in using AI to build the most powerful tools in the world to give people greater voice, while bringing people across the political spectrum together to identify shared solutions. Our core petitions platform, used by more than 100 million people annually, is growing rapidly - and we are rebuilding it from the ground-up using new tools to turn anyone into a powerful civic leader on the issues they care about. Soon we will launch a new platform to identify the >80% of issues that most people agree on, locally and nationally, and to mobilize hundreds of millions of people to advocate for those common-ground solutions. To realize this vision, we’re expanding the most talented team in the world at the intersection of technology and social impact - all focused every day on building healthier democracies globally.

Requirements

  • Strategic Judgment: Understands company priorities and can connect short-term execution to long-term goals; exercises sound judgment in situations with multiple, complex considerations.
  • Operational Leadership & Execution: Designs and runs the systems and processes that keep the COO's office and Ops function focused and executing excellently. Some background in most operations functions specifically — finance, people, legal, or equivalent — not just general consulting or project management. Knows what "good" looks like in a mature ops function.
  • Executive Communication & Influence: Excellent writer and communicator; skilled at distilling complexity into clarity for internal and external audiences. Can prepare briefing materials that actually enable decisions, not just summarize information. Can influence senior stakeholders without positional authority.
  • Relationship Building & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Earns credibility quickly; able to build strong relationships with senior staff across all departments and foster alignment across teams.
  • AI Interest & Potential: Genuinely curious about AI and its implications for how organizations operate. Systems thinker with a growth mindset — the kind of person who picks up new tools quickly and thinks about where they create leverage. Doesn't need to have done it before, but should be excited about it.
  • 7–10+ years in operational, strategy, or CoS roles within a fast-moving tech or mission-driven organization.
  • Demonstrated success supporting or partnering directly with a COO, CEO, or other C-suite executive.
  • Prior experience as a Chief of Staff, Head of Operations, or Strategy/Operations lead.
  • Some background in operations functions — finance, people, legal, or equivalent; not just general consulting or strategy experience.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a trusted extension of the COO — anticipate information needs, pressure-test decisions, and prepare high-quality briefings that enable action across the budget cycle, policy questions, and the company's highest-priority strategic initiatives.
  • Own the operating rhythm — build and maintain the cadence that keeps the COO and Ops leadership team prioritized, prepared, and following through — from weekly rhythms to annual planning.
  • Show up as a credible proxy — represent the COO in cross-functional settings, facilitate org-wide leadership processes including executive meetings and offsites, and keep momentum moving when the COO is unavailable.
  • Drive operational excellence — audit and improve key processes across the Ops function, ensuring the team executes against agreed plans with consistency and rigor.
