About The Position

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at Atrium Health Pineville leads the development and execution of nursing strategic and operational plans, focusing on quality, teammate engagement, care experience, financial performance, and growth, all aligned with enterprise goals. This role is responsible for maintaining safety, risk, and compliance standards across all care levels, including departmental requirements and action plans. The CNO develops and implements nursing plans, staffing, and workflows that align with organizational strategies and manages operating and capital budgets for nursing and other assigned areas. A key aspect of this role is leading the development and adoption of innovative care delivery models based on evidence-based practice, safety, and economic drivers, optimizing resource utilization while balancing quality, safety, cost, and workforce sustainability. The CNO collaborates with stakeholders to monitor performance against clinical quality targets and leads improvement initiatives using rigorous methodologies. This position fosters a work environment of clinical excellence, structural empowerment, and two-way communication through shared governance, engaging nurses in professional practice decisions, evidence-based practice, nursing research, and innovation. The CNO supports Magnet & Pathways principles and designation efforts, advances the nursing profession through professional development and leadership succession planning, and develops, coaches, and evaluates nursing leaders. Ensuring the provision of time, resources, and learning environments for continuous professional development and competency-based practice for all nursing team members is crucial. The role also leverages healthcare technology and nursing information systems to enhance care delivery and outcomes, advocates for workforce well-being, and ensures compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and professional practice requirements.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in nursing or healthcare related field required (MSN, MBA, MHA, or similar).
  • Must have MSN if undergraduate degree is not BSN.
  • Active registered nurse (RN) multi-state compact and/or single site license with privileges to practice in the state(s) where the RN is providing client nursing services.
  • Nationally recognized nursing leadership or specialty certification required.
  • Typically requires 10 years of progressive nursing leadership experience, with experience in senior management and accountability for staff, budgets and outcomes.
  • Significant experience overseeing nursing operations and quality in a complex healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in nursing operations, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and professional practice standards.
  • Strong strategic planning, enterprise thinking, and change leadership capabilities.
  • Proven ability to lead large, complex teams and influence across matrixed organizations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with executives, physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and external partners.
