The Chaplain delivers a wholistic ministry of spiritual care for patients, families, team members, and physicians. This role provides spiritual care, consultation, and short-term counseling, and facilitates sacramental ministries. The Chaplain responds to codes, emergencies, and crises, and assists families with needs related to a patient's illness, including understanding procedures surrounding death and contacting significant persons. The position also promotes patient safety by reporting issues and participating in safety initiatives. The Chaplain participates in the department's activities to ensure integrated services, including providing site coverage, conducting services, and serving on committees. Responsibilities include patient care planning, interdisciplinary team activities, orienting new team members, and identifying/resolving ethical dilemmas. Consultation is provided to team members regarding the role of faith in recovery, and the Chaplain represents the values of religious communities to healthcare professionals. Collaboration with the clinical pastoral education program includes mentoring students and providing feedback. The mission and values of Advocate Health are supported in clinical and departmental responsibilities. Support is offered to parish clergy through referrals, consultation, and education. Educational initiatives and support groups for patients, families, team members, and faith groups are provided, along with spiritual health education, crisis support, and debriefings. Maintaining good standing and ecclesiastical endorsement through active participation in one's faith group is required.
