About The Position

As the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Availity, you will serve as the company’s senior clinical voice, guiding the application of our platform, workflows, and innovations in real-world care delivery and reimbursement. You will report to the COO and collaborate with Product, Technology, Data, Legal, and Commercial teams to integrate clinical integrity into our large-scale, network-based solutions. Your role will be crucial in building trust with health systems and payers, and accelerating positive impact for patients and providers. The ideal candidate is a clinically credible systems thinker who understands the significant impact of scaled clinical decisions and balances innovation with stewardship, acting as a trusted advisor to both sides of the network. Sponsorship is not available for this position. This role is ideal for someone passionate about influencing workflows related to prior authorization, utilization management, clinical data exchange, and revenue-cycle steps that impact patient access and provider burden at a platform scale. You will also be excited about helping a fast-growing healthcare technology company accelerate through automation and AI-enabled workflows, while managing clinical, ethical, and reputational risk.

Requirements

  • Medical degree required (MD or DO).
  • Extensive experience working with health systems and health plans.
  • Deep understanding of payer-provider workflows, clinical policy, and utilization management.
  • Experience partnering with technology, data, or analytics organizations at enterprise scale.
  • Strong executive presence and ability to influence without direct clinical operations ownership.
  • Background in health IT, healthcare networks, or enterprise healthcare platforms.
  • Experience with clinical decision support, utilization management, or AI-enabled healthcare workflows.
  • Familiarity with value-based care and population health models.
  • MBA, MPH, or clinical informatics experience.
  • Ability to use a camera for all virtual meetings is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical leadership across Availity’s platform, influencing solutions for prior authorization, utilization management, clinical data exchange, and revenue cycle/administrative workflows connected to patient care.
  • Ensure clinical logic, policies, and automation align with standards of care and payer medical policy frameworks.
  • Identify and mitigate clinical, ethical, and reputational risks associated with scaled automation and AI-enabled workflows.
  • Partner with Legal, Compliance, and Security teams on clinical governance and regulatory considerations.
  • Act as the senior clinical partner to Product, Engineering, and Data Science teams.
  • Validate clinical assumptions embedded in business rules, analytics, and AI models.
  • Ensure solutions are usable, defensible, and trusted in real provider and payer environments.
  • Serve as Availity’s primary clinical executive for enterprise customers.
  • Support payer medical leaders, provider executives, and clinical operations teams in adopting Availity solutions.
  • Partner with Sales, Growth, and Customer teams in complex clinical discussions, evaluations, and implementations.
  • Align Availity’s value messaging to payer and provider priorities: quality, efficiency, administrative burden reduction, and trust.
  • Define clinical success criteria for solutions supporting payer-provider interaction and decision-making.
  • Ensure clinical claims are accurate, defensible, and supported by evidence or operational logic.
  • Support outcome measurement tied to efficiency, quality, and reduced friction in healthcare delivery.
  • Represent Availity as a credible, clinically grounded leader in the healthcare ecosystem.
  • Educate internal teams on the intersection of clinical practice, payer policy, and operational realities.
  • Help position Availity as a trusted, neutral intermediary in healthcare collaboration.
