About The Position

THE BERKSHIRE GAS COMPANY is seeking a Chief Garage Mechanic. This position is a Union role and involves scheduling and assigning daily work, assisting supervision with administrative tasks, performing vehicle and equipment diagnostics and repairs, and coordinating with outside vendors. The role also includes maintenance of a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle program, including compressor function and repair, as well as computerized Fleet Management Systems and inventory control. The Chief Garage Mechanic will also perform certified warranty work and handle hazardous waste as needed, with company training provided. This is a DOT Safety Sensitive position, requiring a drug screen for internal transfers from non-safety sensitive roles.

Requirements

  • Must possess all the qualifications and be able to perform the duties of a Garage Mechanic.
  • Formal automotive education with at least 5 years’ experience in technical automotive and heavy-duty service.
  • Must be superior technician with strong diagnostic skills and ability to work well independently.
  • Thorough knowledge of compressed natural gas vehicle program including compressor function and repair.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and gain their cooperation.
  • Willingness to accept further education as deemed necessary by supervision.
  • Experience in computerized Fleet Management System and Inventory Control.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule and assign daily work.
  • Assist supervision in processing and communication regarding orders, payments, applications and other administrative items.
  • Perform diagnosis and repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist Garage Mechanics with diagnostics and repairs as needed.
  • Assist in Compressed Natural Gas vehicle conversions and compressor repairs.
  • Assist in maintenance of Fleet Management System and garage inventory.
  • Coordinate appointments with outside vendors as needed.
  • Calibrate engine analyzer and maintain state vehicle emissions records.
  • Maintain, service and repair CNG fueling equipment including compressors and filling stations as required.
  • Perform certified warranty work for vehicle manufacturers as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • May involve handling hazardous waste; company training provided.
