About The Position

The Chemistry Department at Washington University in St. Louis seeks a full-time teaching faculty member at the rank of Lecturer to lead instruction in undergraduate Chemistry courses and play an integral role in curriculum development. This position has an initial commitment of one academic year, with renewal pending adequate performance in the first year. This position is also eligible for future merit-based promotion in accordance with the WashU Arts & Sciences policies for Teaching Faculty. The position will start Fall 2027. The position requires excellence in Chemistry education and requires collaboration with other faculty and staff members to develop and teach course materials, including syllabi, lecture notes, course content videos, recitation materials, exams, and quizzes. The Lecturer will be fully engaged in the continued development, delivery, and smooth operation of Chemistry lecture courses. Specific responsibilities include teaching in lecture and recitation classes, holding regular office hours and help sessions, and course administrative duties such as grading, overseeing weekly content, and composing quizzes, problem sets, and test questions. As a full-time faculty position, the role includes attending faculty meetings and participating in department committees. Additional components of the position include managing graduate student AIs and providing resources that enhance undergraduate education in Chemistry course sequences (such as, but not limited to, the General Chemistry Peer-Led Team Learning program, Residential Peer Mentoring Program, etc.) The Lecturer will work collaboratively with other faculty members to ensure the course content and material presented to students is in line with current pedagogical best practices. Above all, the Lecturer is expected to remain passionate about student learning and compassionate toward student needs, and to work to create an educational experience that is equitable, inclusive, and supportive of students’ professional development. This includes establishing policies and procedures to enhance student belonging and self-confidence, student sense of success and comprehension, student competency, and student performance in Chemistry courses.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or E.D. in chemistry
  • Experience or qualification to teach General Chemistry preferred
  • Postdoctoral experience in instruction or research and/or a past record of accomplishment in teaching as an instructor of chemistry lecture courses at the college level is also preferred
