About The Position

PPG is hiring a Chemical Technician for its onsite Dearborn, Michigan facility. The technician monitors and tests plant chemicals and coated metal parts, collects production-line samples, records results, and helps maintain laboratory and operating equipment. The role also includes operating and adjusting automotive plant equipment through HMI consoles, supporting production teams, and covering for other technicians as needed. Candidates will be trained on skills they lack. The position reports to the Plant Manager and works 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday, with mandatory weekend overtime availability based on production needs.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience in a laboratory or chemical operations environment.
• High school diploma or GED.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with technicians and engineers to troubleshoot production issues, share testing workloads, and ensure smooth shift handoffs.
• Follow plant safety rules, including PPE requirements, hazardous-waste handling, and other plant safety protocols.
• Test and monitor plant chemicals, including pretreatment baths, electro-coat tanks, and wastewater systems.
• Perform routine physical and chemical tests on metal parts, including coating weight, alkalinity, acidity, and conductivity testing.
• Safely collect daily chemical samples from the production line and record measurements such as pH, conductivity, and titration results.
• Clean, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment, including pH meters, conductivity meters, and analytical balances, and perform general maintenance of operating equipment.
• Enter test results into the PLC and flag out-of-specification items to production teams.
• Operate, monitor, and adjust automotive plant equipment using HMI consoles to regulate automated part flows through load/unload conveyor tables.
• Provide coverage for peer technicians during unplanned absences or sick leave to maintain production.
• Remain available for mandatory weekend overtime driven by customer schedules, demand changes, or manufacturing spikes.
