Chemical Operator III

Redwood Materials•Reno, NV

About The Position

The Chemical Operator III is a safety-critical role responsible for safely and consistently operating chemical processing systems in a continuously operating manufacturing environment. Operators make real-time decisions while on shift, monitor process conditions, identify risks, and take appropriate action to protect people, equipment, the environment, and product quality. Chemical Operators take ownership of assigned equipment and processes. They are expected to be accountable, follow standard work, escalate abnormal conditions early, and intervene when conditions are unsafe or outside established operating limits. Safety is the top priority in every task and decision.

Requirements

  • Basic working knowledge of chemical plant operations and process equipment.
  • Ability to follow procedures precisely while maintaining situational awareness and sound judgment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation and record-keeping habits.
  • Comfort navigating complex HMIs, such as Ignition, to monitor and control processes and troubleshoot.
  • Knowledge of hazardous-material handling.
  • Willingness to speak up, escalate issues early, and respectfully challenge unsafe conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Six months of experience in chemical plant operations or with process equipment is preferred.
  • HAZWOPER certification, or ability to obtain certification.
  • Passion for sustainability and contributing to a safer, more responsible manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a strong commitment to personal, team, and process safety.
  • Identify unsafe conditions, at-risk behaviors, and abnormal process conditions; correct them when safe and escalate issues beyond their authority or capability.
  • Follow and reinforce safety procedures, permits, and controls, including PPE, LOTO, and hazardous-material handling.
  • Communicate safety concerns, near misses, and abnormal events during shift handovers and through reporting channels.
  • Operate, monitor, and control a continuously running production line using established procedures, standard work, and operating limits.
  • Use process data, instrumentation, and alarms such as temperature, pressure, pH, and flow to make decisions and take corrective action.
  • Recognize process deviations and equipment degradation early and respond before issues escalate.
  • Adhere to process limits and specifications; do not bypass safeguards or procedures.
  • Execute startups, shutdowns, and transitions according to approved instructions.
  • Own assigned equipment and process areas, ensuring stable, compliant operation, inspection, and maintenance.
  • Operate chemical processing and material-handling equipment, including holding tanks, utility manifolds, bulk material conveyance systems, centrifugal and metering pumps, heat exchangers, filters, centrifuges, filter presses, kilns, evaporators, and wastewater treatment systems.
  • Perform field rounds, sampling, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Document operating conditions, deviations, and actions accurately.
  • Collect in-process and finished-product samples according to procedures and verify results against expected parameters.
  • Communicate process status, risks, and issues with Engineering, Maintenance, and Manufacturing teams.
  • Conduct thorough, factual shift handovers to support continuity and shared understanding.
  • Support troubleshooting, maintenance coordination, and continuous improvement as required.
