About The Position

This position assists in interviewing and selecting staff for the patient care unit, working with the Manager to provide leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and departmental goals. The Charge Nurse communicates with the Manager regarding shift issues and challenges, and assists with the professional growth and development of staff, including participation in performance evaluations and employee counseling. This role supervises professional and/or technical unit staff and student nurses on shift, determines staffing mix and assignments based on patient acuity and staff expertise, and oversees the maintenance of necessary supplies. The Charge Nurse collaborates with ancillary support services to ensure a safe environment, assists in maintaining budgetary limits, and promotes open communication between shifts, departments, and physicians. They adhere to and assist in the practice of emergency procedures, fire drills, and disaster plans, and provide input on patient care policies and procedures. The role involves evaluating patient care through assessment, planning, intervention, and documentation, and administering direct nursing care as needed to maintain clinical skills and support staff. The Charge Nurse acts as a patient advocate, communicates care plans to patients and health professionals, maintains confidentiality, and directs patient and family teaching. They cooperate with clinical instructors, assume responsibility for their own continuing education, and may serve on committees. The position requires conducting all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and hospital policies, including Blood and Body Substance Precautions, and continuously supports the Mission and Values of Johnson Memorial Health.

Requirements

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Indiana required.
  • BSN required.
  • Must maintain current BLS or CPR for Healthcare Providers certification.
  • One year of experience in emergency or critical care nursing required.
  • Must obtain ACLS or ALS within six months of hire.
  • Must complete Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within one year of hire.
  • Requires a 24‑month employment commitment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in interviewing and selecting staff for patient care unit.

  • Participates in completion of performance evaluation of staff.
  • Assists Manager in counseling employees, developing staff and, as appropriate, utilizing disciplinary process.
  • Supervises professional and/or technical unit staff and student nurses on shift.
  • Determines staffing mix and amount based on budgeted hours and patient acuity.
  • Assigns duties based on patient unit needs and individual expertise of staff members.
  • Oversees maintenance of supplies necessary for providing emergency and routine nursing care.
  • Collaborates with ancillary support services to provide a safe, comfortable, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Assists in maintaining budgetary limits in both operating expense and FTE by utilizing resources appropriately.
  • Promotes open communication and continuity of care between shifts, floors, physicians/providers and departments through verbal reports, charting, patient care plans and assisting with transfers.
  • Adheres to and provides assistance in orientation to and practice of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans.
  • Provides input in formulating patient care policy and procedures and standards of care for patient care services.
  • Evaluates patient care through assessment, planning, intervention, re-evaluation, written documentation, observation, and comparison to established standards and administers nursing care to patients, as needed, to maintain clinical skills, assess particular patient requirements and support staff.
  • Assumes role of patient advocate respecting guidelines found in Patient Bill of Rights.
  • Communicates with patient, significant others and health professionals regarding care for patient.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient record and patient, physician, staff, or other healthcare provider information, whether verbal or written.
  • Participates in and provides direction for teaching of patients and significant others.
  • Cooperates with clinical instructors in planning, implementing, and evaluating students’ clinical experience.
  • Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and developmental needs; attends meetings, workshops, and conventions to enrich personal knowledge, growth, and skill in providing clinical care.
  • Serves on committees in patient care/nursing, hospital-wide or professional nursing organizations.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.
