About The Position

The Charge Nurse - Emergency Department position is a full-time role (40 hours/week) involving a 12-hour night shift, including every third weekend and rotating holidays. This role participates with unit leadership in the development and improvement of departmental processes, facilitates patient flow, and enhances teamwork by providing guidance and support to all staff. The Charge Nurse takes responsibility for Outcomes Management, ensuring optimal and timely patient care within defined parameters. They also participate in the development of Service Line initiatives and guide staff through process changes. Key aspects of the role include exhibiting positive service excellence skills, demonstrating stewardship through responsible resource use, and actively participating in Shared Governance activities. The Charge Nurse maintains awareness of department operations across all shifts and accepts accountability for staying informed about organizational changes. They serve as a resource and leader, coaching staff, overseeing patient assignments, and promoting a professional practice environment. This role contributes to staff performance management and fosters a compassionate and caring environment through effective teamwork and open communication.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required.
  • Current RN Pennsylvania state license required.
  • Current BLS required or obtained by completion of orientation.
  • ACLS required or obtained by completion of orientation if Applicable to Area of Practice.
  • Previous ER experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Participates with unit leadership in development and improvement of departmental processes.
  • Facilitates patient flow both in and out of the Emergency Department.
  • Enhances teamwork by providing guidance and support to all staff.
  • Takes responsibility for Outcomes Management, ensuring that patient care is optimal and timely and that patient outcomes are within defined parameters.
  • Participates with unit leadership in development of Service Line initiatives and guiding staff in successfully completing process change.
  • Exhibits positive service excellence skills to patients, visitors and colleagues by greeting others in a friendly manner, keeping them informed about progress, delays and changes.
  • Demonstrates stewardship by thoughtful and responsible use of resources including maintaining a clean and hospitable environment, starting work on time, maintaining good attendance and displaying a conscientious attitude towards costs, supplies and departmental finances.
  • Actively participates in Shared Governance activities through direct participation on committees, counsels or work groups.
  • Facilitates unit-based meetings.
  • Maintains awareness of department operations on all shifts/days.
  • Reviews minutes and obtains reports to ensure accurate knowledge.
  • Accepts accountability for staying informed about changes in the unit, in the service line and the organization.
  • Serves as a resource and leader by providing guidance and direction to staff through rounding and frequent interactions with all members of the team.
  • Actively coaches staff as needed.
  • Oversees the delegation of patient assignments and clinical care at the unit level, in partnership with the PCM/DON.
  • Promotes a professional practice environment guided by organizational and professional standards.
  • Participates with unit leadership in development, implementation and assessment of unit policies and procedures.
  • Coaches staff as needed to ensure compliance.
  • Contributes to staff performance management process by providing observation and documentation to PCM/DON.
  • Contributes to the creation of a compassionate and caring environment for patients, families and colleagues through displays of kindness and active listening.
