About The Position

Animation Inc. is developing Animates, an AI companion app combining real-time animation, natural conversation, and long-term memory. The company seeks a Japanese Character & Dialogue Writer to help make its AI characters feel expressive, engaging, and emotionally authentic through their personalities, dialogue, and interactions with users.

This is a creative writing role, not a traditional translation or localization position. The writer will shape how characters speak, express emotions, develop personalities, and interact with users. The role emphasizes natural spoken Japanese, conversational rhythm, and subtle differences in language according to a character’s personality, emotional state, and relationship with the user. Extensive professional experience is not required; creativity, character understanding, and the ability to write natural, compelling conversations are emphasized.

The collaboration is expected to begin on a freelance basis, with the possibility of a longer-term partnership. The work is fully remote with flexible arrangements. Workload and scope will be discussed during the hiring process. Applicants should provide examples of character writing or dialogue; independent and personal projects are welcome, and a formal professional portfolio is not required.

Requirements

• Native-level Japanese proficiency and a strong understanding of natural spoken Japanese, conversational nuances, and everyday communication.
• A strong ear for colloquial expressions, conversational rhythm, humor, tone, and emotional nuances.
• Strong creative writing skills, particularly in character development and dialogue.
• Ability to communicate in English with an international team in writing and in meetings.
• A portfolio or writing samples demonstrating the ability to create distinct characters and natural conversations.
• Interest in AI, interactive conversations, and character-driven experiences.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in creative writing, character development, video games, film, or other entertainment industries.
• Experience in screenwriting, theater, comedy, or other dialogue-driven creative work.
• Experience with interactive storytelling, branching dialogue, or conversation design.
• Interest in or experience with AI characters and conversational AI products.
• Firsthand understanding of contemporary everyday Japanese communication.
• Russian language skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop and refine character personalities, voices, and speaking styles.
• Write natural, engaging Japanese dialogue reflecting different personalities, emotions, and conversational situations.
• Refine conversational rhythm, tone, humor, and emotional expression.
• Propose and help define how characters respond, express themselves, and build relationships with users.
• Create dialogue guidelines to ensure consistency in character personalities and communication styles.
• Collaborate with international creative and product teams to improve character experiences.
• Review and refine existing character conversations to make them more natural, authentic, and emotionally engaging.
