About The Position

The Character Designer explores options to craft the look, feel, personality, and appeal of characters. Working with the Production Designer, Art Director, and other creative leads, the designer develops multiple character looks throughout the pitch, design, and production process. This is a union-covered position at Sony Pictures Animation, an animation studio creating feature animation and animated series. Requirements

Excellent draftsmanship.
Ability to articulate creative ideas.
Skill in character poses, facial expressions, and character turnarounds.
Outstanding research skills and an understanding of costume design.
Knowledge of anatomy and volumetric drawing.
Photoshop knowledge.
Stylistic versatility to support projects with distinctive visual languages.

Nice To Haves

Previous experience on an animated feature film, television series, or game is preferred.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with creative leadership throughout pitch, design, and production to explore and discover characters’ look, feel, and personality.
Review scripts to identify characters needed at the handout of each episode.
Create multiple character iterations, including poses, expressions, and turnarounds, from rough passes through approved final designs.
Propose design approaches that account for downstream departments, including modeling and texturing.
Back up and appropriately store artwork, and prepare shipping materials on time.
Contribute creative solutions, respond effectively to feedback, and iterate on designs throughout production.
Communicate questions, issues, and production concerns proactively to supervisors and production staff.
Meet production schedules and deadlines while maintaining artistic quality and consistency.
Work independently and within a team environment.
