About The Position

The Spiritual Care Staff Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support to patients throughout the facility (Emergency Room, inpatient units, both medical and psychiatric, ICUs, and outpatient areas as needed) as well as families, and healthcare staff. This role involves assessing and addressing the spiritual and emotional needs of individuals possibly facing health care decisions, trauma, and chronic/terminal disease. The Staff Chaplain collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree - MDiv. In lieu of MDiv, a different graduate/master’s theological degree completed at a school accredited by the Association of Theological Schools or the Council for Higher Education may be considered.
  • Board Certified Chaplain in the Association of Professional Chaplains, Spiritual Care Association (or equivalent group, NACC, NAJC, etc.) or is eligible to become Board Certified. If the chaplain is “Board Certified eligible”, then within 18 months of beginning employment, their application for Board Certification will be submitted.
  • Ordained, licensed or commissioned to function by faith/denominational authority.
  • Four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education as offered by ACPE or NACC completed.
  • Ecclesiastical endorsement by a recognized faith group to function in a ministry of pastoral care.
  • 1 - 2 Years equivalent experience - Experience in congregational and/or hospital ministry.

Responsibilities

  • Provide spiritual counseling and support to patients, families, and staff throughout the healthcare enterprise, with special attention to designated areas (Emergency Room, Trauma Services, ICU patients)
  • Provide emergency, crisis intervention via 24-hour in house or on-call services; provide on-call and back-up coverage in rotation with other team members, as requested.
  • Actively participate in interdisciplinary rounds, hospital committees, and in-service education opportunities, as appropriate, to enhance the visibility and awareness of the Spiritual Care team.
  • Act as a liaison to fall faith traditions, assisting in contacting necessary outside local clergy, as needed.
  • Respond to spiritual care requests from patients, families, and staff, including providing available resources
  • Maintain and/or update resources with any applicable changes to different faiths and beliefs
  • Educate staff about specific religious needs and issues of patients and families which affect their care and treatment. Follow up with staff debrief, as needed.
  • Assist with orientation of staff and providers to UC Health policies related to spiritual care support, including availability of support resources
  • Support community/visiting clergy, including volunteers and students, in understanding UC Health policies
  • Maintain documentation of visits in appropriate clinical tool(s), such as Epic Electronic Health Record, iRound, SafeCare, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned to maintain departmental service standards
  • Position may require travel between UC Health sites/facilities
