PRN Chaplain / Spiritual Counselor - Hospice
About The Position
VitalCaring is seeking a compassionate Hospice Chaplain / Spiritual Counselor to provide emotional and spiritual support to patients and families during life's most meaningful moments. This role is for individuals called to serve others through compassion, presence, empathy, and spiritual guidance, helping patients and loved ones find comfort, dignity, peace, and connection throughout the hospice journey. As a trusted guide, you will offer individualized spiritual care aligned with each patient’s beliefs, values, and preferences, supporting emotional well-being and helping families process difficult moments with dignity and compassion. Your visits, conversations, and interactions will aim to bring peace, reassurance, and hope.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited seminary or school of theology (BD, MDiv, or equivalent theological degree required)
- Knowledge of and commitment to hospice philosophy of care
- Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team environment
- Comfort serving within an interfaith setting
- Ability to support individuals from diverse cultures, lifestyles, beliefs, and backgrounds
- Excellent communication, empathy, and active listening skills
- Experience working with death, dying, grief, and family/caregiver support
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and current automobile insurance for field-based responsibilities
Nice To Haves
- Hospice, palliative care, or healthcare spiritual care experience
- Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) experience
- Strong grief counseling and emotional support skills
- Ability to quickly build trust and meaningful relationships
- Established relationships with community clergy and faith-based organizations
- Experience documenting within an EMR platform
Responsibilities
- Assess spiritual and emotional needs of patients, caregivers, and families
- Develop and support individualized spiritual care plans
- Provide spiritual counseling, emotional support, grief support, and compassionate presence
- Support patients and families through difficult conversations, transitions, and end-of-life experiences
- Participate in interdisciplinary team (IDT) meetings and care planning
- Collaborate closely with nurses, social workers, physicians, aides, and community clergy
- Help ensure holistic, patient-centered care aligned with patient goals and wishes
- Coordinate visits from local clergy or faith leaders when appropriate
- Build meaningful, trusting relationships with patients and loved ones
- Provide comfort and guidance while respecting diverse faiths, beliefs, cultures, and lifestyles
- Help families navigate grief, anticipatory loss, and emotional stress with empathy and sensitivity
- Serve as a calming and supportive presence during deeply personal moments
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
- Participate in quality and compliance initiatives
- Support hospice philosophy and agency standards of care
- Maintain ongoing professional development and continuing education
