About The Position

St. John's University invites applications for a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as Department Chair of Nursing for its newly established Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program within the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. This is an exciting opportunity to shape and lead a growing program that graduated its inaugural cohort in May 2026. Reporting directly to the Dean, the Department Chair will play a pivotal role in advancing the BSN program’s continued development, with a strong focus on achieving and maintaining CCNE accreditation standards, fostering academic excellence, and preparing practice-ready, compassionate nurses.

Requirements

  • Nursing doctoral degree (DNP, Ph.D. or equivalent) required.
  • Experience as a nursing educator in an accredited nursing program, preferably in a BSN or higher program. Experience may include teaching, clinical practice, and administration. Must be able to demonstrate evidence of knowledge and skills related to teaching adults, teaching methodology, curriculum development, and curriculum evaluation.
  • Must be a nurse licensed or regulated as a registered nurse in a United States jurisdiction and eligible for licensure in New York.
  • Must be eligible for appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level and possess research and scholarship experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build and maintain relationships with faculty, administration, staff, and students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic academic and administrative leadership for the Department of Nursing
  • Guide the ongoing development, assessment, and accreditation of the BSN program
  • Recruit, mentor, and support a diverse and high-performing faculty and staff team
  • Oversee curriculum planning, course scheduling, and program evaluation
  • Engage in student advising and success initiatives, ensuring a supportive learning environment
  • Promote faculty scholarship, professional development, and community engagement
  • Collaborate with the Simulation Center to provide quality nurse clinical simulation experiences
  • Serve as an active member of the College Executive Committee, contributing to broader institutional initiatives
  • Effectuate faculty policies regarding admissions and academic standing.
  • Provide department leadership in initiating and implementing the proper advisement of undergraduate students.
  • Be available to students each semester until all final grades are posted by all faculty members in the department and resolve any issues.
  • Have initial responsibility for receiving, evaluating, and resolving student complaints regarding academic matters pertaining to the department.
  • Have primary responsibility for recruiting appropriate candidates for the instructional staff of the department.
  • Assign faculty to specific courses and arrange faculty schedules in conjunction with the appropriate department committees and program coordinators in conformity with University and College procedures.
  • Monitor and guide the professional development of nursing faculty. This shall include evaluation faculty, where the Chairperson deems it appropriate, regarding the individual’s performance as a teacher and as a researcher, the relationships of the individual with students and colleagues, and the individual’s professional and creative work.
  • Administer the system of evaluation of faculty members, administrators, and staff in the department.
  • Chair the Department Personnel and Budget Committee meetings.
  • Supervise the activities of all non-instructional personnel in the department.
  • Chair the Department Educational Policy Committee meetings.
  • Provide leadership in developing programs of study, updating existing degree programs, maintaining current course syllabi, textbooks, and other instructional materials and assuring appropriate support for programs of study in the University libraries and in other similar University facilities.
  • Have initial responsibility for planning course offerings for each semester and summer session in conjunction with the appropriate department committees and program coordinators.
  • Submit all required documentation (i.e course syllabi) to the Office of the Dean as requested.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Assessment & Accreditation on the submission of the University required assessment reports, College program assessment reports, CCNE assessment data, and related activities.
  • Prepare the department budget in conjunction with the Department Personnel and Budget Committee and administer the final department budget.
  • Prepare materials for the Bulletin in consultation with program coordinators.
  • Prepare the department annual report.
  • Maintain department records.
  • Supervise the use of the nursing skills labs and special equipment of the department.
  • Review all grant proposals before they are submitted to the proper authorities by department faculty and, where appropriate, by students.
  • Meet on a regular basis with the faculty members of the department to conduct the regular business of the department.
  • Attend meetings of Chairpersons called by the Dean and/or the Provost and VPAA at least once a month and at other reasonable times.
  • Maintain office hours for students at least four (4) days a week. Chairperson's office hours shall be posted and communicated to the Dean, department faculty, and students.
  • Represent the department at scholarly and professional meetings when such attendance is deemed by the Dean to be appropriate.
  • Attend orientation and training offered by the Provost and VPAA.
  • Attend college retreat and other development programs as deemed appropriate by the Dean.
