About The Position

Labcorp is seeking a Certifying Scientist to join our team in Houston, TX. This position is eligible for a shift differential and requires some overtime. The role involves performing GC/MS and LC/MS certification, reviewing and interpreting data, and ensuring adherence to quality procedures, confidentiality, and chain of custody protocols. The Certifying Scientist is responsible for releasing various types of specimen results, including negative, positive, dilute, rejected, and retest results. Understanding and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), laboratory and safety policies are crucial. Additional duties may be assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Chemical or Biological Science OR Master's degree in Chemical or Biological Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology with 1 year or more of clinical testing OR Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Biological Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology with 2 years or more of clinical testing experience
  • Understanding of laboratory operations as well as policies and procedures
  • Experience working in a high volume laboratory environment
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Excellent research and problem resolution skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks at a given time
  • Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems
  • High level of attention to detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position
  • Able to pass a standardized color blindness test
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs

Nice To Haves

  • Current or prior Labcorp experience
  • 3 months or more of Certifying Scientist or Toxicology experience
  • 6 months or more chromatography and/or mass spectrometry experience
  • Certifying Scientist and Toxicology experience
  • In lieu of education requirements listed above, non-traditional degrees with applicable science credits that meet CLIA standards may meet education requirements
  • Qualify as an NLCP Certifying Scientist in an appropriate time frame

Responsibilities

  • Perform GC/MS and LC/MS certification in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and supervisor guidance.
  • Review and interpret all data from screening, SVTs and confirmatory GC/MS and LC/MS chromatographic data and all associated quality control, calibration and instrument data.
  • Understand and follow quality procedures and protocols for security and confidentiality.
  • Review and follow chain of custody procedures with accuracy and consistency.
  • Verify accuracy of all chain of custody and specimen documentation and sign where necessary.
  • Release all results for: Negative specimens, Negative and Dilute, Rejected Specimens, Positive Drugs, Invalid Adulterated Substituted, Positive and Dilute, Retests, Quantitative Results, D & L methamphetamine results.
  • Understand and follow Standard Operating Procedures and protocols as directed.
  • Understand and comply with all laboratory and safety policies.
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
