About The Position

The Certified Surgical Technologist is responsible for providing assistance to the surgeon before, during and after the surgical intervention. The Surgical Technologist is also responsible for the preparation of the surgical suite before and after surgical cases. Performs physically, mentally and emotionally demanding work. Works in a confined area under stressful conditions. Health hazards present at all times, rotating hours as required. "On call" time as assigned. The Surgical Technologist will also assist in the reordering of supplies and maintaining order and cleanliness in the surgery unit. The Surgical Technologist may be cross trained to Endoscopy suite or Interventional Pain procedure in the same capacity. The Surgical Technologist will also perform same duties as a Central Sterile Processing Technician.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Graduate of accredited school for Surgical Technologists.
  • Must complete continuing education concerning surgical technology as required to maintain certification.
  • CPR certification at first available opportunity at WMH.
  • Surgical Technologist certification required within 90 days of employment.
  • Must successfully complete the Surgical Technologist orientation skills checklists and program in surgery within three months.
  • Must be able to utilize professional judgment.
  • Must be a mature individual with good communication skills.
  • Must be physically capable of accepting stressful situations and physical demands.
  • Must possess organizational skills and principles of sterile techniques.
  • Must successfully complete training in Infection Control, Universal Precautions, Hazardous Chemicals, and Body Mechanics.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist experience – required.
  • Must possess knowledge of sterile environment and surgical procedures and instrumentation.
  • Must possess organizational skills to prioritize and organize surgeon/patient care needs to provide quality and efficient surgical intervention.
  • Must be able to deal with the demands and stressors that are encountered when dealing with patients, physicians, and coworkers.
  • Must possess sufficient strength to position/reposition the immobile geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric and infant patient who is sedated.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must have hand major and fine motor skills.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally to patients and coworkers.
  • Must have sight and hearing abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Must utilize PPEs for every procedure and decontamination process.
  • Must be able to wash hands frequently and wear gloves without causing skin irritation.
  • Must use proper body mechanics when positioning geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and infant patients who are unconscious.
  • Must be fitted for an approved injection control mask by completing a TB Fit Test as administered by WHS approved personnel.
