This position involves preparing instruments, supplies, and equipment to maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for the patient. The role requires collaboration with the registered nurse and perioperative team to implement the care plan for the patient's procedure. Ensuring environmental safety for patients and personnel by wearing appropriate surgical attire and personal protective equipment, anticipating the needs of the patient and the perioperative team, and maintaining aseptic technique are key responsibilities. The role also includes actively participating in universal protocol and time out processes, initiating proper procedures for sponge, needle, and instrument counts, and ensuring proper care and handling of specimens, medications, equipment, and instrumentation on the sterile field. The technician will hold retractors, sponges, or suction the operative site, cut suture material, connect drains, and apply dressings as directed by the surgeon. Cleaning and preparing instruments for decontamination and sterilization, assisting with room preparation for the next patient, and demonstrating proficient computer skills with Meditech and ORM are also part of the duties. Additionally, the role may involve serving as a preceptor/mentor to new operating room staff and attending staff meetings, inservices, and continuing education opportunities.
