Get to Know Your Team: Seton Medical Center Harker Heights is an 83-bed acute care hospital offering services such as Cardiology, Emergency Services and a Level IV Trauma Designated ER, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Total Joint Replacement, Gastroenterology, Diagnostic Services, and more.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited surgical first assistant program (including didactic and clinical practicum) with certification as a Surgical First Assistant or completion of a surgical first assistant program meeting the minimal requirements of the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
  • Certified Surgical First Assistant Certification (CSFA) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), or have been employed to practice surgical technology before September 1, 2009.
  • 5+ years’ experience as a surgical technologist, including 1+ year of current operating room experience as a surgical first assistant.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.

Responsibilities

  • The surgical first assistant assists the surgeon during the procedure with retraction, skin suturing, tying, hemostasis, and other first assistant skills according to the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) standards and practices.
  • Responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
  • Participates in providing quality care by supporting quality improvement initiatives.
  • Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
  • Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is on constant watch for maintenance of the sterile field.
