About The Position

The Certified Surgical Coder reviews and analyzes physicians’ documentation and assigns CPT, modifier, and ICD-10 diagnosis codes. The role ensures coding compliance with established guidelines, third-party reimbursement policies, regulations, and accreditation guidelines. It performs complex and technical physician surgical coding assignments, abstracts and enters information for reimbursement, obtains pathology reports from PowerChart when applicable, corrects TES and Claim Scrubber edits, and resolves coding-related discrepancies. Additional duties may be assigned by management. The position is with Stony Brook CPMP Patient Accounts in Stony Brook, New York, and may be eligible for remote work at the manager’s discretion; it is available only to New York State. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Current Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), CCS-P, or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification.
• At least 1 year of physician surgical coding experience.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word and Excel.

Nice To Haves

• Associate’s degree.
• 3 years of physician surgical coding experience.

Responsibilities

• Review and analyze physicians’ documentation and assign CPT, modifier, and ICD-10 diagnosis codes.
• Ensure compliance with established coding guidelines, third-party reimbursement policies, regulations, and accreditation guidelines.
• Perform complex and technical assignments related to physician surgical coding.
• Analyze, code, and abstract information to assign and enter appropriate, consistent diagnoses and procedure codes and modifiers for reimbursement.
• Obtain pathology reports from PowerChart when applicable.
• Enter information into the database.
• Correct TES and Claim Scrubber edits.
• Resolve discrepancies on coding-related issues.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.
