Certified Special Education Substitute Teacher
About The Position
Kokua is hiring Special Education substitute teachers to support KIPP schools across the Houston area during the 2026–27 school year. Substitute teachers lead classrooms and help create safe, supportive learning environments. Assignments and locations are selected by the substitute, with schedules shared before an assignment is accepted. Start and end times vary by school; most assignments begin between 7:00 and 8:00 AM and end between 3:45 and 4:45 PM. Some schools may have earlier or later needs. The role offers up to five days of work per week, with daily assignments paying $176 per day and long-term assignments paying $197 per day. Substitutes may also support their campus throughout the school day with duties such as lunch and recess supervision, hall and bathroom monitoring, tutoring, and test proctoring. Kokua offers weekly pay, a support team available every day from 6 AM to 8 PM, and a W-2 employment arrangement. Out-of-pocket costs are reimbursed after 10 teaching assignments. The role may provide a pathway to full-time positions at high-performing K–12 schools.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of classroom teaching experience, preferably in a special education setting.
- Valid Texas Teacher Certification in Special Education (EC-12); proof of certification is required upon applying.
- Confidence managing a classroom of students.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
- Ability to pass state and federal background checks.
- Strong belief that every child has a unique and powerful gift to share with the world.
