About The Position

Kokua is hiring Special Education substitute teachers to support KIPP schools across the Houston, Texas area during the 2026–27 school year. Substitute teachers lead classrooms and help create a safe, supportive learning environment. They may also assist across the campus with activities such as lunch and recess supervision, hall and bathroom monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season. Teachers can choose assignments and locations and may work up to five days per week. Start and end times vary by school; most assignments begin between 7:00 and 8:00 AM and end between 3:45 and 4:45 PM. The schedule is provided before an assignment is accepted, though flexibility for earlier or later needs is helpful. Daily assignments pay $176 per day and long-term assignments pay $197 per day, with weekly paychecks. The role offers access to Kokua’s support team from 6 AM to 8 PM every day and may provide a pathway to full-time positions at K-12 schools.

Requirements

• At least one year of classroom teaching experience, preferably in a special education setting.
• Valid Texas Teacher Certification in Special Education (EC-12); proof of certification is required upon applying.
• Confidence managing a classroom of students.
• Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
• Strong belief that every child has a unique and powerful gift to share with the world.
• Ability to pass state and federal background checks.
