About The Position

New Paradigm For Education (NPFE) is a non-profit Charter Management Organization (CMO) dedicated to serving students in Detroit, Michigan. NPFE specializes in maximizing student learning potential through proven educational practices and managing all phases of school design, planning, and program implementation. NPFE is on a mission to ensure that all students in Detroit achieve at the highest levels, supporting educational transformation through increased student achievement, fiscal responsibility, and community support. We seek educators who believe all students can perform at high levels and deserve a quality education, regardless of their background. We are looking for culturally responsive educators with experience in diverse communities and strong relationship-building skills. The School Counselor will provide counseling and guidance services to students, including individual and group counseling, classroom guidance, parent consultation, registration, academic planning, and credit evaluation. The role aims to promote and enhance student learning through academic and personal/social development, utilizing strategies that respect and affirm student identities and needs.

Requirements

  • Certified Michigan School Counselor
  • Bachelor's degree in Guidance and/or School Counseling
  • Experience using culturally affirming practices
  • Working with diverse communities
  • Strong relationship-building skills to understand students, families, and communities

Nice To Haves

  • Masters degree
  • A minimum of three years of teaching, counseling, or other experience working with children grades K-12

Responsibilities

  • Plan a balanced and comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program that includes guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning, and system support components
  • Manage program personnel and or other program resources
  • Advance and support the school developmental guidance and counseling program, operating with the highest ethical and professional standards with school personnel, parents, students, and the community
  • Conduct and coordinate structured group lessons to deliver guidance curriculum effectively
  • Accurately and without bias guide individual and groups of students and parents to plan, monitor, and manage the student’s own personal and social development
  • Consult with school personnel, parents, and other community members to promote understanding of student development, individual behavior, the student’s environment, and human relationships
  • Adhere to legal, ethical, and professional standards related to assessment
  • With the assistance of school personnel, interpret standardized tests results and other assessment data to guide students in individual goal setting and plans
