About The Position

Under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician assists in filling prescriptions and preparing IV admixtures by interpreting, transcribing, and preparing medications for dispensing. This role involves a variety of technical, clerical, and supply duties, which may vary depending on the work location (outpatient retail, inpatient hospital, infusion pharmacy) or shift assignment. The position offers a career pathway with increasing responsibilities and competencies across three levels: Pharmacy Technician I, II, and III. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
Temporary or permanent Michigan Pharmacy Technician license required upon hire with permanent Michigan Pharmacy Tech licensure required within one year from issuance of temporary license.
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification is required by the State of Michigan to transition from temporary to permanent licensure.
Students currently enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy with a valid pharmacy intern license are not required to have Pharmacy Technician Certification.
Skills in mathematics and basic algebra.
Ability to read, interpret and analyze data from various systems and equipment in order to set an appropriate plan of action in coordination with the pharmacists.
Effective communication skills to report and discuss findings, as needed with pharmacists, hospital personnel and external customers.
Ability to foster a positive, professional working relationship with coworkers.
Self-motivation.
Accuracy and initiative to complete routine and urgent tasks.
Ability to effectively prioritize tasks within the constraints of stated objectives and to provide effective timely follow-up as needed.
Work which is constantly and exceptionally tiring mentally and/or visually. Conditions exist more than 90% of the work time.
Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.
Able to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time.
Permanent Pharmacy Technician license in good standing with State of Michigan is required (for Pharmacy Technician II and III).
Internal applicants must have no current disciplinary action plans and the most recent performance evaluation score above 2.0 (for Pharmacy Technician II and III).

Nice To Haves

3-6 months of experience and/or training in hospital, retail pharmacy or elsewhere - OR - equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred (for Pharmacy Technician I).
If not previously trained, a 3-month formal training in pharmacy procedures is preferred (for Pharmacy Technician I).
Valid driver's license may be needed for some job functions.
Demonstrates ability to complete and maintain all competencies of a Pharmacy Technician I (for Pharmacy Technician II).
Demonstrates ability to complete and maintain all competencies of Pharmacy Technician II (for Pharmacy Technician III).
Active professional organization involvement.

Responsibilities

Assist pharmacists in filling prescriptions and preparing IV admixtures.
Interpret, transcribe, and prepare medication(s) for dispensing.
Fill orders with appropriate medications for review and approval by a Registered Pharmacist.
Perform a variety of related technical, clerical, and supply duties.
Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and document as required.
Prioritize and process orders per instruction from the pharmacist.
Inventory management (re-stocking, rotation of stock, expired medication removal).
Delivery of supplies and medications to nursing units (hospital setting).
Operating the medication carousel (hospital setting).
Packaging/repackaging medications (hospital setting).
Assist in receiving medication delivery (hospital setting).
Prepare non-sterile medication compounds (hospital setting).
Complete assigned inspections of medication storage locations (hospital setting).
Perform sterile medication compounding, which may include parenteral nutrition preparation (Pharmacy Technician II/III).
Assist the pharmacist in obtaining patient home medication histories and clarifying/reconciling home medications (Pharmacy Technician II/III).
Utilize the teach back method and provide patient medication education under the direction of the pharmacist (Pharmacy Technician II/III).
Run and maintain pharmacy robotic medication compounding equipment (Pharmacy Technician II/III).
Assist the pharmacist with reviewing pharmacokinetic reports, collecting and entering patient height/weight, and reviewing patient lab reports (Pharmacy Technician II/III).
Outpatient pharmacy purchasing of supplies and medications (Pharmacy Technician II/III).
Function in the role of OR Technician, ED Technician or Decentralized Pharmacy Technician (Pharmacy Technician II).
Chemotherapy compounding following institutional policies, procedures, and protocols (Pharmacy Technician III).
Advanced level home medication histories for admission reconciliation in the emergency department (Pharmacy Technician III).
Advanced level pharmacy buying (Pharmacy Technician III).
Advanced level automated dispensing cabinet configuration, maintenance, and optimization (Pharmacy Technician III).
Controlled substance diversion monitoring (Pharmacy Technician III).
Advanced inventory management (Pharmacy Technician III).
Departmental scheduling for large departments (Pharmacy Technician III).
Support the bedside medication delivery program (meds to beds) (Pharmacy Technician III).
Specialty pharmacy program support (Pharmacy Technician III).
