This job qualifies for a $6,000 sign-on bonus, provided the candidate meets the eligibility requirements. The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) performs preliminary screenings as ordered by a physician, including detailed patient medical/ocular histories, visual acuity, tonometry, lensometry, pupil exams, instilling ocular medication, and visual field testing. The role involves maintaining and cleaning ophthalmic exam lanes and equipment, ensuring exam rooms are stocked, and interacting professionally with patients, families, coworkers, and physicians while maintaining patient confidentiality. The COA participates in their own professional development by maintaining required competencies and continuing education hours to sustain certification according to JCAHPO guidelines and current CPR certification. Under physician direction, they may perform prescription refills following standard guidelines and perform other duties incidental to the work based on their certification level. The position requires excellent communication skills, computer proficiency (EMR preferred), a solid understanding of ophthalmic practice and instrumentation, and proficiency in basic preliminary ophthalmic testing. The ability to multitask efficiently, recognize safety hazards, withstand long periods of standing and walking, and work as a focused, organized team player are essential.
