Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants focus on the effects of injury on individuals’ social, emotional, and physiological conditions. They help individuals meet goals established by an evaluating therapist related to balance, motor skills, posture, and perceptual and cognitive abilities through functional, everyday activities. Occupational therapy helps individuals regain physical, perceptual, and/or cognitive skills needed for activities of daily living and achieve greater independence. The assistant works directly with consumers, their families, case managers, supervising therapists, and other professional staff to support goals related to brain injury, employment, education, and independent living. Services must follow each consumer’s plan of care and/or physician orders. The role also includes timely documentation, participation in team meetings and training, maintaining professional relationships and confidentiality, and supporting departmental and agency objectives.
