About The Position

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts. The Virginia Department of Health Pittsylvania-Danville Health District is seeking a qualified candidate for a Certified Nurse Practitioner Senior role. This position will be based at the Danville Health Department servicing the Pittsylvania and Danville area but will also support the Southside Health District locations - Halifax, Mecklenburg, and Brunswick counties. This position performs patient care as a nurse practitioner with limited or no on-site access to a physician for guidance and oversight. Performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes controlled substances, may directly perform or direct others to perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, and develop and implement care plans including the administration of medication and case management. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner by state code.

Requirements

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Practitioner in Virginia required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practice and health principles, physical examination techniques and findings both normal and pathological, disease states, diagnostic testing and limits of testing, and pharmacology
  • Ability to perform and interpret physical assessments, obtain medical history, perform and/or interpret diagnostic testing, formulate differential diagnoses and plan of care and provide health education to clients
  • Ability to develop patient management plans; excellent clinical judgement with ability to know the limits of practice and when to seek consultation
  • Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with staff, patients and the public; ability to participate in educational and professional programs
  • CPR/BLS certification

Nice To Haves

  • Prior public health or community health with significant clinical experience in prenatal, STI, family planning, pediatrics and family practice preferred
  • A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency

  • If this position is designated as a mobile worker, this includes both working in the field and teleworking at an alternate location when not in the field or during an emergency closing.
  • You may be required to periodically come into your assigned office to attend meetings or training.
